Hands up who’s ready for spring? As soon as the daffodils start popping up in the local park, regardless of the single figure temperatures that are still showing in the weather app, I’m straight into my spring sewing plans and ready to put the 90 denier tights away!
In today’s post, we’ve had a browse at the trends hitting the high-street this season and how we can sew the looks ourselves. I hope this post will inspire your spring sewing and spark some ideas, and we promise it’s not all florals…

Comfy & casual layering
It’s hard to predict what the weather’s going to do from one day to the next, especially in the UK, so layering is key for this in-between season. Let’s start with the basics – we have a large selection of top patterns that make great base layer tops. From our fitted Agnes top to our more relaxed Coco top, depending on what you’re in the mood for we’ve got you covered with multiple sleeve lengths and necklines. But if you’re looking for the ultimate T-shirt sewing pattern, you’ve got to check out the Tabitha T-shirt from our book Make It Simple!
Dungarees are a must-have for easy (and mega comfy) transitional dressing and we’ve got a bunch of versatile options for you! Our Mila dungarees are a classic shape, perfect for fabric like denim and twill, with classic blue denim dominating the spring trends. Then we have our ultra-comfy Marigold and Safiya from Make It Simple styles which work perfectly with lighter weight fabrics like chambray, viscose and double gauze.
Tiers on tiers on tiers
Tiered skirts are everywhere this spring – seriously. Whether it’s one tier, three tiers, a mini smock dress or a midi length, you need a tier or two in your wardrobe ASAP! But instead of bold floral prints, this season it’s neutral shades, ditsy florals and checks doing the talking. Think blue chambray, linen blends and viscose ideal for gathering. Our Indigo add-on pattern is just what you need to take you through all seasons.
Coming soon: If tiered skirts have caught your eye, we have a brand new pattern coming out soon which you might want to keep an eye out for…
Check it out
You can never go wrong with checks at any time of the year and luckily they’re back for spring ’21! Choose from classic gingham combined with the Indigo pattern to create a designer-inspired smock dress. Or try pastel checks and buttons for our Bettine dress and Alexa jumpsuit. If you’re slowly easing out of the black tights a darker check will make the transition easier!
Dots and daisies
It wouldn’t be a spring post if there wasn’t a nod to florals! But surprisingly there isn’t an overwhelming amount of floral prints or bright colours popping up on the high-street just yet, but there’s a couple of patterns that are starting to come through…
Daisy prints and darker base palettes are dominating the floral genre, with abstract polka dot prints (the kind where you aren’t too sure if they might actually be leopard print) aren’t far behind. Make a statement with a relaxed fit Lotta dress or a floral Safiya jumpsuit (find the pattern in our book Make It Simple), much like the green one above, or perhaps sew your own spring Mathilde blouse or Stevie top in an eye-catching print to pair with plain pieces if you’re not ready to go head to toe prints yet.
I hope you’re now feeling inspired and ready to crack on with your own spring sewing plans. Make sure to share your spring makes with us across our social media channels – we looove seeing them.
