Fabric Shopping for the Joe PJs

Fabric shopping for the Joe pyjamas - Tilly and the Buttons

Have you heard the news? We have released our first ever menswear pattern – the Joe pyjama bottoms or shorts! It’s a pattern you can make for someone special in your life, and it co-ordinates with our Jaimie pyjamas pattern so you can make a matching set of Jaimie and Joe pyjamas.

The best thing about making pyjamas is you can let your imagination run wild and choose any print your heart desires. Whether you are making a pair of Joe PJs for somebody who has a classic wardrobe or clothes with a sense of humour, the right fabric is waiting to be discovered.

We have been snooping around some fabric shops, looking for a bucketload of options for the Joe pyjamas to share with you. You just need to decide which style fits the recipient’s character the best!

This blog post includes fabrics from our blog advertisers. We have picked these ourselves without any input from the advertisers.

We will kick off with most exciting news about the Joe pyjamas – they co-ordinate with the Jaimie PJs, which means one thing – twinning! Tilly dreamt up the Joe pyjamas so the whole family could match in handmade PJs this Christmas.

The socially distanced shoot couldn’t have been more fun – as we wanted a hugging couple, our Product Manager Nikki and her husband Dan posed in matching cats in Christmas hats Joe and Jaimie PJs bottoms. I know, it’s too cute, isn’t it? If you love cats in hats (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t), you can copy this adorable pair and use the same fabric from Fabrics Galore.

Does anybody else insist on wearing PJs for most of Christmas day? You could make someone special festive pyjama bottoms that can be the highlight of the season for many years to come! Pick a fun festive print or go for a classic snuggly flannel pair. Don’t forget to make your own pair to match for a cheesy Christmas card pose 🙂

You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of Joe PJ bottoms. The kind that are marked out as favourites from the minute they’re tried on. They will happily co-ordinate with that sloppy tee that somehow makes it through every wardrobe sort-out and carries lots of memories with it.

Checks or plaid fabrics definitely tick the classic PJs box, and you can often find them in brushed cotton which is super snuggly. Chambray, like fabric no.8, would be great for a crisp pair of the Joe shorts. And of course, you can’t go wrong with stripes for pyjamas!

We went classic for the Joe pyjama bottoms and shorts samples with checks and stripes. The Denim and Daydreams check that we found at Fabworks worked so nicely for the shorts and the Sea Spray stripe, also from Fabworks, is so fresh and classic.

PJs are meant to be fun, so why not make a pair in a novelty print? Whether you are whipping up a pair of Joe pyjamas for a space lover, sailing aficionado, or proud pet parent, there is a fun print that will speak to your loved one’s personality!

If novelty isn’t quite right for the lucky person who’s going to receive a handmade pair of Joe PJs, you don’t have to rule out prints altogether. Unleash their wild side with a bit of leopard print or choose a fabric inspired by the night sky. What about a retro print for somebody who likes a blast from the past? Fabric no.3 feels oh-so 80s and fabrics no.1 and no.10 give off super 70s vibes.

There is nothing like pulling on a fresh pair of pyjamas after a hard day. PJs can feel very luxurious in the right fabric, so why not make a pair of luxe Joe PJs for your favourite person? It’s a great opportunity to use something special, like Liberty Tana Lawn fabric (fabrics no.2 and no.3). A silky viscose would feel lovely against the skin, and we think fabric no.2 would make a very posh pair of Joe shorts.

We hope that has given you a few ideas for what you can make the Joe PJs with – whoever the recipient, there is a style for everyone!
